Prince William and Kate Middleton are being applauded for spending the Christmas holiday with the royal family while Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appear to be snubbing the queen with their holiday plans. Are the Cambridges making the Sussexes look bad?
Inside Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth’s relationship
Queen Elizabeth and Kate Middleton reportedly have a “very easy relationship,” which makes the holidays a particularly lovely time for the family. Royal commentator Katie Nicholl told OK!: “Both women are actually quite shy so it’s taken time for them to get to this stage, but they have a very easy relationship now they’ve both made the effort.”
Nicholl added: “The Queen loves seeing Kate because it’s an opportunity to spend time with her and hear how her great grandchildren are doing.”
Prince William and Middleton will spend Christmas with the queen
The queen will get to catch up with Prince William and Middleton when they spend Christmas with the royal family at Sandringham.
Nicholl noted: “I imagine that spending Christmas at Sandringham with her grandchildren and great grandchildren will be something she’s very much looking forward to.”
She added: “So Kate and William are doing the dutiful thing and putting the royal family first.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are skipping the royal family Christmas
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle won’t be in attendance at the royal family Christmas, opting instead to spend the holiday with Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Sussexes won’t be joining the traditional family gathering, noting in a statement: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month. Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, Their Royal Highnesses will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria Ragland.”
Many royal fans believed the Sussexes were snubbing the queen, but the statement noted that Queen Elizabeth was supportive of their decision: “This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen.”
While there was some uproar about the Sussexes’ plans for the holiday, royal expert Kate Williams believes it shouldn’t be so surprising. Williams told Sky News: “Harry and Meghan are going to stay with Doria as opposed to staying with the Queen in Sandringham. And it really interests me that this has been such a big story. Because, of course, William and Kate have repeatedly stayed with the Middletons over Christmas and not with the Queen.”
She added: “They made that decision for family time. We’ve also seen Zara Tindall and Mike Tindall do it as well. So I find it quite surprising that it seems like such a royal catastrophe when Harry and Meghan do exactly what Kate and William have done themselves.”
The queen is reportedly disappointed
Though the official statement said the queen is supportive, one royal insider told Us Weekly that she is “disappointed” because her grandson Archie won’t be there.
The source told Us Weekly that the Sussexes want Archie’s first Christmas “to be super special,” adding, “It’ll be just Doria and the three of them. The drama surrounding the couple has caused a huge amount of stress. They’re making their family their No. 1 priority right now.”
