Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino left prison a changed man. The 37-year-old reality TV personality was released from federal lockup in early September after serving eight months for tax evasion. His time behind bars had given him time to reflect — and work out.

The Jersey Shore star lost 35 pounds while he was behind bars, he told ET. He did that by focusing on what he ate (which was a challenge given the limited food options in prison) and practicing intermittent fasting. He also spent a lot of time in the gym. Sorrentino worked out two or three times a day, he revealed. By the time he was done with his sentence, he was sporting a new toned physique. And he’s not about to let that go.

The Situation is focused on staying healthy

Sorrentino and his wife Lauren are serious about their healthy lifestyle. He’s been chronicling his fitness journey on Instagram, sharing regular updates about his workouts and focus on living his best life.

“Everyone thought that I was just going to come back and be eating my best life every single day,” he told People. But after losing so much weight, he had no desire to pack on the pounds again. (He’s even shed another 5 lbs. since leaving prison.)

He’s also been pushing back when people suggest that he took shortcuts to get his new body.

“I am flattered you think I am on performance enhancing substances but I am not,” Sorrentino wrote on Instagram after someone accused him of using drugs to speed up his transformation. “I am on probation and get tested biweekly for illegal substances. What you see is hard work, determination, proper diet, exercise, muscle memory, intermittent fasting, prison and genetics. You should try it sometime!! People love to throw shade on what shines. Stay in your own lane and run your own race cuz!! Do you even lift !? #clapbackseason.”

He also enjoys regular cheat days

While Sorrentino is clearly working hard to stay in shape, that doesn’t mean giving up everything he enjoys. He told People that he still enjoys the occasional Funfetti cake.

“Just now I practice living my best life, or eating my best life, on cheat days with my wife,” he said. “I really am proud of the body that I have and the 40 lbs. that I lost, but at the same time, you always need that one cheat day, which we do once a week.”

His latest cheat day meal is drawing criticism

The Sorrentinos have been chronicling their epic cheat day meals from places like McDonald’s and Wendy’s on social media. But their latest indulgence has raised some people’s eyebrows — and not because of its calorie count.

Mike and Lauren headed to Chick-fil-A for some fried chicken, and some people called them out for their choice of restaurant.

“Prob shouldn’t support homophobes,” commented one person, referring to the Georgia-based chain’s habit of donating to anti-LGBTQ charities. Earlier this year, the company announced it would refocus its giving efforts, supporting organizations that fight hunger, homelessness, and promote youth education. But it hasn’t ruled out donating to such groups in the future.

“Very disappointed you are eating and PROMOTING chic fil a,” wrote another. “They are very much anti lgbtq+ eating there and promoting them is promoting those same beliefs.”

“Bigotry chicken ain’t worth it!,” someone else chimed in.

Maybe they’ll try Popeye’s next time?
