Over the ten years that the hit show Friends was in production, there were many different storylines regarding love and life. One of the most famous plot lines was the on-again-off-again romance between Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston).
Towards the later seasons, there was a new romance between the group of friends that left fans shocked: Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Rachel. By that point in the series, fans were still rooting for Ross and Rachel to get together. After all, they had already had baby Emma by that time, and it was clear that they were harboring a love for each other.
However, Joey and Rachel had declared a mutual attraction and decided to give things a shot. The relationship was short-lived, barely lasting a few episodes, and most people didn’t even have a chance to get used to the idea before it fizzled out.
It was well-agreed upon that the particular storyline just didn’t work, yet some fans still wish Rachel would have ended up with Joey on Friends.
Ross and Rachel were one of televisions’ most talked-about couples
Long before Joey and Rachel ever hooked up, she was involved in a serious relationship with her roommate’s older brother, Ross Geller. It was revealed on the show that Ross had been in love with Rachel since they were in high school, yet never had the courage to ask her out.
Ross watched for a year while she dated other men, including the notorious Paolo, before finally deciding that things would never happen. It was while Ross was on a business trip to China that Rachel found out how he felt, and she decided to go for it. Yet her dreams went up in smoke when Ross arrived home with a new girlfriend, fellow paleontologist Julie.
Were Ross and Rachel really on a break?
Ross and Rachel finally got together, much to everyone’s delight, and for months, the relationship was moving in the right direction. Many people even thought that a proposal was going to happen. However, things didn’t get that far.
Rachel, who was under extreme pressure at work, decided that she “needed a break” after Ross got clingy and possessive. While they were on a break, Rachel discovers that Ross went out and cheated on her with another woman.
When Rachel found out about his infidelity from coffeehouse worker Gunther, Ross defended himself by saying that they were “on a break,” which became one of the show’s most notorious catchphrases. Rachel ended the relationship anyway and for the duration of the show, fans were left constantly wondering if they would ever get together once and for all.
Joey realizes he is in love with Rachel
According to Cosmopolitan, it was in Season 8 of the show that Joey realized he saw Rachel as more than a friend. He kept it to himself for a while, finally breaking down on Valentine’s day and confessing to Ross how he felt.
Ross told Joey that he needed to tell Rachel, who was pregnant with Ross’s child at the time. Joey does; however, she didn’t feel the same.
It wasn’t until the season 9 finale that Rachel decided she wanted to give a relationship with Joey a chance, and they officially became a couple.
Some fans still wish that Rachel would have ended up with Joey on ‘Friends’
So, would the show have been better if it would have ended with Joey and Rachel declaring their love for each other and living happily ever after? Some fans think so!
They seem to feel that it showed Joey’s true feelings, according to Reddit. Joey spent years going from one meaningless relationship to another, and Rachel was the first woman he was ever truly in love with. Fans were happy that Joey had finally found someone he felt that way about.
As for Ross? He most likely wouldn’t have found anyone that he loved as much as Rachel, so it is somewhat of a relief that they finally ended up together when the series ended.
