“Supergirl” star Melissa Benoist is opening up about being a survivor of domestic violence and intimate partner violence (IPV) in an emotional 14-minute video. Posting the emotional footage on her social media ahead of Thanksgiving, Benoist recounted her story, stating, “I am a survivor of domestic violence, or IPV, intimate partner violence.” While she never revealed her abuser’s name, she stated that she never expected to reveal the news. Revealing her alleged abuser was younger than her when they began dating, she stated their relationship developed through friendship first. While he made her feel “special and worthwhile,” that all changed when they became a couple.
Revealing Her Journey:
“It’s still hard for me to dissect what I was thinking and feeling that kept me from stopping what felt like a runaway freight train,” the actress said in the video. She suggested that this action stemmed from her broken non-violent childhood. Melissa Benoist also stated that her ex was extremely jealous and would often take issues with what she wore and wasn’t happy about romantic scenes that she was expected to do for work. “Work in general was a touchy subject,” she told fans. “He didn’t want me ever kissing or even having flirtatious scenes with men, which was very hard for me to avoid, so I began turning down auditions, job offers, test deals and friendships, because I didn’t want to hurt him.”
Describing the first incident occurred within 5 months of their relationship, the “Supergirl” star alleged he threw a smoothie in her face but soon escalated. “I learned what it felt like to be pinned down and slapped repeatedly, punched so hard I felt the wind go out of me, dragged by my hair across pavement, head-butted, pinched until my skin broke, slammed against he wall so hard the drywall broke, choked,” she recounted. The actress also revealed that she never told anyone for fear it would get worse. Benoist also said when she’d try to get away by locking herself in rooms, her alleged preditor would break down the doors.
The actress also stated after the alleged abuse, her ex would force her to take a bath then later he’d apologize but she stayed because “deep down I never believed he would change.” She continued, “I just fooled myself into thinking I could help him… Someone had to let him know his behavior wasn’t OK, and who better than the one he was taking it out on?” Benoist also revealed his abuse forced her to become violent. “I changed and I’m not proud of how I changed,” she said.
The Last Straw:
Melissa Benoist’s breaking point came when her abuser allegedly threw an iPhone at her, breaking her nose and nearly rupturing her eyeball. She lied about her injuries to police and nurses at the hospital but revealed she found the courage to tell a close friend. “The more people I let in, the more I was bolstered,” she recalled. Ending her emotional video, the actress stated, “None of this is salacious news, it was my reality. What I went through caused a tectonic shift in my outlook on life.” Following the outpouring of love from her video, the star took to social media to thank her supporters. “By sharing my story, hopefully I can empower others to seek help and extricate themselves from abusive relationships. Everyone deserves to be loved void of violence, fear and physical harm,” she wrote.
