Meghan McCain took a day off from The View this week and it was business as usual. The conservative co-host did not waste any time in falling back to throwing a tantrum and lashing out at her fellow co-hosts. It only took a dig from Joy Behar to set off the Republican and make things go south.
McCain took an absence on Thursday, the same day that Whoopi Goldberg returned to the show. Her day off was seemingly pre-scheduled as they had Bari Weiss as a guest co-host take McCain’s seat. The Republican returned for Friday’s live show and things got fiery once again.
During “Hot Topics,” the ladies talked about Nancy Pelosi’s epic clap back at a reporter that questioned if she hated Donald Trump. McCain agreed that her response was handled “masterfully” but didn’t like how everything is memeified.
The ABC daytime co-host explained that Pelosi’s camp created a hashtag and is now selling merchandise with the Twitter trend.
“This is very serious,” McCain said. “We’re talking about the Constitution. We’re talking about impeachment. And for me, it reduces it—it’s very reductive to start selling sweatshirts that say #DontMessWithNancy.”
However, when Joy Behar interjected with a quip, McCain completely lost it.
“So you mean like hats that say Make America Great Again?” Behar joked.
Following laughter and applause from the audience, McCain completely shut down and refused to continue speaking. She looked away from the table and into the audience, pouting and crossing her arms looking disgruntled.
Fans have serious thoughts about Meghan McCain
After The View posted a clip of the debate on social media, viewers mocked McCain for her constant tantrums. The conversation veered back to why she is on the show if she continues to throw these fits on-air.
“Good one Joy, about the MAGA hat,” a fan tweeted. “Meghan, [you’re] really good at rolling your eyes at the audiences. Meghan, you really need to go somewhere if you can’t take audiences clapping for Joy’s view. After all, as you say, it is called The View.”
“OMG ABC, get rid of Meghan McCain [from] this panel of adult [and] professional women. Replace her with Ana Navarro who knows how to carry on a political debate without being combative and rude,” a viewer added.
“Someone just got dog-walked [and] now she’s pouting,” a Twitter user said referring to McCain. “Don’t dish it out if [you] can’t take it.”
“Need to get rid of spoiled brat Meghan. I’m tired of her pouting every time someone disagrees with her. Big baby,” another fan commented.
What Meghan McCain fears the most
This type of backlash from fans is what McCain fears the most in the social media age. Due to the fact that she is very expressive and opinionated, she has previously stated it could land her in trouble as fans might misinterpret her words. It was during an appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live that McCain expressed she always goes into The View in fear.
“I go in assuming I’m going to be fired every day,” McCain told host Andy Cohen. “Every single day. Yes, every day.”
Although she assumes she will get let go from the opinion show, she assures that she hasn’t come close to that happening.
“It’s more the tone we are [at] culturally, people get canceled so easily,” she explained. “And by the way, Joy has this same thing, because we are the most honest and raw. And we’re always going to say something that is going to be too far one way. So I say it sort of jokingly, but sort of not.”
The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET and 10 a.m. PT/CT.
